Toward the end of the 19th century, great interest arose about the need to preserve colonial history. The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America (often written as the NSCDA) was founded in Philadelphia in April of 1891. Today, there are forty-four Corporate Societies representing a total membership of over 15,000 members.
The NSCDA in The State of Alabama was organized on February 22, 1898 and incorporated on March 13, 1899. Since 1957, The Alabama Society has owned, preserved, and operated the Conde Charlotte Museum House in Mobile. What began in Mobile with a membership of 17 women now has over 800 members statewide…
